This charming French card (originally part of a diorama envisioning a future simplified by the use of technology) depicts a warmly lit parlor room filled with fashionable people. Intended to depict the future, by the year 2000 (En L'an 2000) it was believed by some that standard households would be heated by radium. Chauffage au Radium directly translates to "Radium Heating" in English. The discovery of radium by Pierre and Marie Curie created the perception of radium as an economic and technological opportunity, a cure for many ailments, and a fashionable topic and accessory.
