During the first decades of the 20th Century, the patent medicine industry was booming in the United States and around the world. The market for cure-alls and quackery produced many products that claimed to fix a myriad of problems.
The Radium Radia box claims that the product is a "Sure cure for rheumatism, sciatica, lumbago, sprains, bruises, cold on chest, swollen joints, neuralgia" and the label on the bottle features a "before and after" illustration of a man revitalized by the restorative power of Radium Radia. Additionally, this product did not contain radium, but was instead a liniment that was mostly made from capsicum and turpentine, and would have provided topical pain relief. Despite providing some amount of actual scientific pain relief, regulating bodies under the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 found Radium Radia's name to be misleading considering its lack of radium content and the product was pulled from the market.
